Park Zone Spitfire Mk llB RTF

A couple of years ago I read an article on the Park Zone Mustang and although the article was well written and interesting as a model builder I just didnít get it. Then by a bit of good luck a friend offered me a flight with his recently purchased Park Zone Spitfire. I found it really very nice to fly and for a Park Flyer coming straight from the box the performace was very impressive, with loops and rolls from level flight.

Mark, my son, was then offered a flight which he glady took and I could see from the look on his face that it was on the cards that we should get one. He was having a ball looping and rolling and beating up the runway with low fast passes.

We sent for ours and it arrived after a couple of days. On opening the box all was present right down to a screwdriver and a spare prop. There was also a wire for x-port combat extension lead, which we have not as yet used.The batteries, also in the box for the transmitter were placed into the transmitter and the flight battries were put on charge using the 12 volt charger from the box, as it says all you need is in the box. [see picture] We switched on and nothing happened, very disappointing. We tried different things and still no joy so we made a phone call to Horizon Hobby at Harlow and a replacement transmiter was sent to us, thank you Horizon Hobby. After making a few flights in itís standard colours I thought it was time for me to have a play with the colour scheme so off came the stickyback decals carefully along with the canopy, pilot, propeller and spinner. I then used good old Humbrol paints and my Bagder airbrush to apply some more camouflage after which I then placed on the new vinyl roundles and letters. [see photos] My next task was to mark out various panel lines and then give the whole airframe a weathered look using coloured pastels, HB pencils, and light washes of paint from my airbrush and there we have it a used looking Spitfire.

Going back to the instructions you read that this model can use Li-Po battries of 11.1 V 3 - cells so we duly purchased a charger and a 2500mAh Li-Po pack. When charged we followed step 14 in the booklet and we were ready to fly with this lighter and more powerful battery set up and wow what a difference. This is so much better now a really good little model, plus you get so much more time to play and you donít need to buy a different speed controller either what more could you ask for?

So in conclusion I think this is a good buy for the money spent when powered with Li-Poís. I have also changed the propeller to an APC 10 x 7 e which really ups the performance and keep noise levels down.
