Aluminium Bronze

A type of bronze in which aluminium is the main alloying metal added to copper, in contrast to standard bronze (copper and tin).

  • CA104 - developed for use in the naval and general engineering industries as it has increased corrosion resistance.
  • NES833 - this is a similar alloy to CA104 that has to meet stringent Ministry of Defence guidelines.

Tends to work harden so make sure tools are very sharp. Make sure drills are very sharp, first drill will tend to go well as it will probably drill off-centre and slightly over-size. The next step in drill size can be problematic especially if the drill is slightly blunt as it will heat the material and then shrink back onto the drill as the cutting fluid cools it down.
