A steam engine converted to run on gas. In the early days of internal combustion engines a number of steam engines were converted to run on gas with a hot bulb ignition. The most difficult aspect of running a steam engine is the boiler, both from a maintenance aspect and the fact that it took time to heat up. The time to heat the water and create the steam was a major problem if you only wanted power for a few hours.
This is where a number of companies offered to convert steam engines to internal combustion, either with a conversion to the cylinder or a replacement of the cylinder.
