Mill Stiffness

The stiffness of a milling machine is one of the most fundamental attributes - this is both static and dynamic stiffness.

The dial gauge is clamped in the chuck using the bars from a magnetic stand.

I then added different weights to the mill, centred them on the top of the main shaft, and recorded the displacement on the dial gauge.

The table below shows the values and conversions.

The static stiffness of the head cantilevered and including the column to base connection is around 1100N/mm - this doesn′t feel like too bad a value, but maybe people could email me some other values for different machines.

We have recently reviewed the Amadeal XJ12-300 milling machine which prompted these checks.
